Self Storage Tips

Helpful hints to make the packing and storing of your belongings a breeze!

  • Use furniture drawers to hold delicate items. Wrap them in bubble wrap or newspaper.
  • When packing toys or smaller objects, remember to fill boxes completely, stuffing open areas with plain newspaper to prevent collapsing when stacked.
  • Be careful not to store anything combustible (such as paint and chemicals) or food products.
  • When storing lawn and garden equipment, drain any fluids prior to storage in order to avoid corrosive damage.
  • Use trash cans to store shovels, hoes and rakes.
  • Always use high quality locks on your unit. Denny’s Storage Co. sells locks on-site; ask the Store Manager for details.
  • When storing delicate heirlooms, use specially constructed boxes, such as wardrobe boxes.
  • Store furniture carefully on boards or pallets. They are provided free of charge with storage unit rental upon request. Pallets must stay with the unit upon vacating.
  • Cover mattresses in plastic to keep them clean.
  • Store small items like pots and pans in large appliances, such as stoves or refrigerators.
  • Break down items (such as table legs) and store large furniture (like tabletops and sofas) on end to save space.
  • Use protective covers and treat wood surfaces before storing.
  • When storing business files, label all boxes and construct aisles so files are easily seen and accessible.
  • Use boxes that are uniform in size, and remember, all boxes should be full, and when stacked, the heaviest on bottom.
  • Books should be packed flat to protect their spines and should be put in small boxes to ease lifting.
  • It’s best to put clothing and curtains in hanging wardrobe boxes or they should be stored in dresser drawers or cedar chests along with linens.
  • Mirrors and pictures need extra protection in a self-storage facility, stack them on their ends and securely place in bubble wrap and tape. Pictures and mirrors should never ever be stored flat.
  • Before storage, separate lamp bases and lamp shades and securely wrap them for protection.
  • A good space saving technique is stacking chairs seat to seat. A small dust cover above them will keep them nice and clean.
